Weekly Newsletter for The Freelancers: Here is the latest newsletter of the week starting on 3rd June 2019.
Even the Harvard Business Review knows that “What freelancer mindset and action lead to success” is a top topic not only in the United States, where there are about 50 million freelancers, but around the world. It is the way that employment is changing.
When you look in a mirror you see a reflection of yourself. Similarly, it is important to look at successful freelancers in your particular field and copy what has made them successful. It appears very simple, but not many freelancers do this. It beats making mistakes and learning that way.
Mistakes and going about things the wrong way is an easy trap to fall into when you start out freelancing. That is why this newsletter aims to search for the articles by successful freelancers in the various categories and share their articles with you.
This quote is very applicable:
“I was a freelancer all through my 20s and was very slow to
get good at what I did.”
– Ira Glass
Harvard Business Review is one of the leading publications on business in the world. I receive their newsletter because it gives top tips.
Amy Gallo has written this timeless article for HBR: How to Become a Successful Freelancer. You can read Amy’s article here.
Motivate Yourself!
“The biggest risk is not taking any risk… In a world that
changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed
to fail is not taking risks.”
– Mark Zuckerberg
Freelancing Mums And Dads Matter To Their Children

Can you remember when you were in primary school whether you knew latch key children who went home to an empty house? I can as it was quite common in my childhood.
It was caused by both parents having to go to work, usually to pay the mortgage. These children will remember this for the rest of their lives.
My wife was a primary school teacher and we made the decision that she would not go back to work until our children reached the end of their primary school.
For us that was our choice for our family. It was a compromise, but it was only possible because I worked in a bank at the time and we had concessional housing finance for employees. Other couples were not so lucky.
Freelancing parents are becoming very common nowadays and the government needs to support them because they are, in fact, small business owners that are not given the recognition they deserve.
Families that decide one parent will work as a freelancer is a great decision for families – one that their children will remember favourably for the rest of their lives.
It can beat the cost of before/after school childcare that erodes the benefit of the second income.
There is an interesting article by Katie Allen about this trend that appears in the Guardian. You can read Katie’s article here.
Productivity Tip Of The Week
Personal Productivity Apps Matter for Freelancers

Apps are tools that can help freelancers lift their productivity. There are social media tools that can also help lift your productivity. I don’t know whether you use or know about Hootsuite or Social Oomph, but they are tools that I find indispensable.
In fact, I think that I would have to give up a lot of online activity if I could not use them. Hootsuite and Social Oomph allow you to automate a lot of time consuming background work that you would not have any chance of managing.
An example of this is that when I had to keep abreast with what was happening with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation because it was going to change cyber security throughout the world.
The leading provider of training for the EU, GDPR, is IT Governance in the UK, of which I am an affiliate.
They have a blog to which they post regularly. I use a Hootsuite RSS feed to post to my Twitter and Facebook Page on this subject.
The reason I am telling you this is that freelancers constantly have to be on the lookout for ways and means to lift their personal productivity and not get swamped with information overload.

Work-Life Balance Tip Of The Week
Work At Home Mums And Dads Share Their Favourite Tips

Talking and sharing your freelance journey can be a very powerful tool in managing your work-life balance.
However, sometimes because of your location, this will not be possible because other freelancers are not close by. Nevertheless you can still be a member of a group online and have a community that spans the globe.
We seek out articles for you and share them in this newsletter, but it can never replace the one to one friendship that can develop from a shared interest. This quote is very appropriate:
“One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to
understand and be understood.”
– Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Robin Long from The Balanced Life Online has shared 11 Tips for Work-At-Home Moms. You can read her article here.

Freelancers And Cyber Security
We have decided to expand our search for appropriate articles for freelancers about cybersecurity.
This week we have found a further article from the Australian Government Department: Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN).
The article for this week is about cyberbullying for which there would not be many families that are not familiar with victims in their circle of friends and family. You can read the article here.
We have gained approval from Robert Siciliano to bring you extracts from his books related to cyber security for freelancers. Robert Siciliano is an identity theft expert and consultant.
He also runs a cyber security and fraud prevention website which you can see here.
